FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION SUMMIT

The Future of Construction Summit (FCON) is the construction industry’s premier national event focused on creating a more progressive, productive and sustainable construction industry.

Launched in 2021, FCON has previously been held in Sydney and Melbourne, and moved to Brisbane in 2024 in recognition of the “once in a generation” infrastructure boom taking place there where billions are being invested to deliver the 2032 Olympic games and support the ever-growing population.

The 4th annual event brought together 700 attendees, which was an increase on the 2023 event in Melbourne (600 attendees) and the 2022 event in Sydney (480 attendees).

Despite persistent challenges in the form of inflation and supply chain bottlenecks, workforce capacity constraints, and the clear need to “close the productivity gap”, the general feeling observed at FCON Summit 2024 was one of optimism for the future of the industry – its leadership, and the ability to adapt and overcome obstacles by leveraging new ideas, innovative approaches and cutting edge technologies.

FuturePlace would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who joined us and helped to create such a successful event – and we look forward to welcoming you back to Brisbane in 2025.

FCON25 will feature:

  • 2 day conference featuring over 80 senior leaders from contractors, owners, financiers and tech companies
  • 700+ attendees
  • Exhibition with 60+ booths
  • High profile networking functions
  • Shark Tank (ConTech Pitching competition)
  • Welcome party and Gala Dinner

CONSTRUCTION LEADERS PANEL: The macro trends driving new opportunities across the construction sector

Strong headwinds continue to impact the construction sector. These include lack of productivity – heightened by labour and skills shortages, further compounded by inflation across energy, materials and the prolonged disruptions across global supply chains that are driving costs higher. Finding solutions to these issues has been a priority for industry leaders. In this discussion our panellists will discuss what the industry can do to address these challenges and realise the significant opportunities ahead.

  • What are the activities and opportunities being put forward by the National Construction Industry Forum (NCIF) and how can the industry capitalise on them?
  • Lack of Productivity is still a major challenge and with more projects coming online and not enough workers to carry them out – what can the industry do to attract more employees and upskill them faster?
  • With supply chain constraints continuing along with increases in energy and material costs, can the current pricing model continue with such tight margins or what can be done to address this?
  • While significant population growth is occurring, state and federal governments are placing a number of crucial infrastructure projects on hold – is this sustainable and what is required to increase government budgets on critical infrastructure?
  • What role will greater innovation and cultural Change play in realising the opportunities across construction?

CASE STUDY - Dealing with the Scope 3 data challenge in construction

As an industry we are on the front lines of a national challenge: confronting the complexity of Scope 3 emissions tracking and measurement. Globally and nationally, there’s a growing emphasis on disclosing these emissions, yet the intricacies involved are substantial. Scope 3 emissions data is scattered across various organisations, with multiple data sources and varying levels of transparency, completeness, and assurance. Compounding this challenge are the inconsistent methods and standards for calculation, along with the absence of standardised data exchange mechanisms across technology solutions.

In this case study we hear how in certifying Fulton Hogan’s baseline and committing to the Toitū Envirocare Carbon Reduce certification, we embarked on a 2 year project to streamline our approach to Scope 3 data collation – with a special focus on purchased goods and services, requiring over 10,000 companies to report to us across Australia in a consistent manner.

  • The nature of the problem as it stands in the AU construction sector
  • The approach Fulton Hogan has undertaken, from; contracts and legal considerations, leveraging digital tools, awareness and education and activating key stakeholders to help guide our approach
  •  Aligning our approach with all relevant stakeholders to deliver better outcomes for all

This Course is designed to address the challenges that show up time and again when managing team behaviour and performance in a high-stress environment. Engineering and Construction is a demanding industry, and a high-performance team is an absolute must-have to achieve outstanding project and business outcomes. Building a high-performance team is a fundamental role of Leadership, and this Course breaks down the team-building process into its key elements. Experienced Leaders will have the opportunity to reflect on their own style and share their learnings and experience with industry peers in a mutually enabling environment.

Key topics covered in this short course include:

  • What truly great leadership looks and feels like
  • The importance of self-awareness, excelling at the basics and leading by example
  • Understanding team dynamics and the repeatable process by which teams develop and improve their performance  – getting ahead of the game
  • Effective coaching tools that enable better conversations and create trust via transparency and integrity
  • Diagnosing the root cause(s) of poor performance – working at cause rather than effect to defuse team drama and shifting dysfunctional behaviour as a barrier to getting things done
  • Understanding team styles and adapting your leadership to achieve outstanding results

What will you get out of attending?

  • This Masterclass will teach leaders and senior managers practical and effective skills and techniques in building high performing teams. Engineering and construction projects and businesses are increasingly complex enterprises as external pressures rise and expectations increase. Teams are looking to their leadership to provide guidance and direction. Leadership with skills in personal management and creating effective team culture deliver outstanding outcomes and increase the value of their enterprises.

Who should attend the Masterclass?

  • This Masterclass will support Directors and Managers with Major Project responsibility as well as Senior Executives leading support functions including Finance, Pre-Contracts, People, Commercial and Governance & Compliance.
